Stories and nature

The Valley of Shadows

The name

Valley of Shadows

The walls stand so close that in places sunlight never reaches the floor.

The walk

Boulders and pools

Boulders "the size of your bedroom", and stretches of waist-deep, even shoulder-deep, water to wade or swim.

The ring

Peaks all round

Alang, Madan, Kulang, Ratangad and Kalsubai surround the valley.

When to go

After the monsoon

Bikat and Treks and Trails run it from October to March. It is not run in the monsoon, when it rains very heavily.

Oct–Mar

The season: green walls, walkable pools.

Jun–Sep

Not run: the gorge fills with water.

Cost

₹3,000 + 5% GST with Bikat, Kasara to Kasara.

Plan your trip

Getting to Samrad

Groups meet at Kasara station late at night and drive about 4 hours to Samrad.

  1. Kasara🚙 About 4 h
  2. Samrad🧗 Through the gorge
  3. Dehene
Shoes

Trekking shoes are mandatory; people in sandals are sent back. Carry a torch.

Rappelling

Wear the harness at all times and keep back from the rock edge.

Good to know

The small things

Cash, signal, water, permits and help on the way. Checked October 2026; confirm with your operator.

No phone signal

There is no network around the valley, and fog and rain are common. If you drive yourself, you can't reach the group by phone. Treks and Trails

Driving yourself

Samrad has parking. Self-drivers are guided to Samrad through Karole ghat by locals. Treks and Trails

Way home

Treks and Trails drives groups from Dehene to Asangaon station, not back to Kasara. Treks and Trails

Toilets

There are no toilets in the gorge. Use the ones in Samrad before you start, or in Dehene at the end. Treks and Trails

Well water

Camps give plain well water. Buy purification tablets at a chemist before you go. Treks and Trails

Rappelling weight limit

There is a weight limit for rappelling. Email the operator to check before you book. Treks and Trails

Weather

Winter nights drop to about 10–15 °C. Monsoon brings heavy rain at 20–30 °C. Bikat Adventures

No offloading

Bikat has no option to offload your bag. Carry only what you need in the gorge. Bikat Adventures

Who runs it

Choose an operator

We found 4 operators with a Sandhan Valley page in October 2026. Most run only from October to March, as the gorge fills with water in the monsoon.

Prices are base prices from each operator's own page (October 2026); most add 5% GST. Ratings are what each operator shows, not an independent audit. Names marked † show last season's price or one seen only in a search snippet.
