The five treasures
Yuksom
The first capital of Sikkim, near the monasteries of Tashiding and Katok. Tshoka has its own monastery, beside a still pond.
Kanchenjunga National Park
The whole trek is inside the park, home to the red panda and the snow leopard.
When to go
Spring or autumn
Bikat runs it in March–April and October–December.
Mar–Apr
Rhododendrons and oak in bloom.
Oct–Dec
Autumn colours. About 10–15 °C lower down, 0–5 °C at Dzongri and above.

₹21,500 + 5% GST with Bikat, permits included. NJP–Yuksom transport is extra.

Getting to Yuksom
Groups meet in Siliguri (NJP) and drive about 150 km to Yuksom. Foreign visitors need a Restricted Area Permit to enter Sikkim and a Protected Area Permit for the trek (see below), and cannot join alone.

Hardest part
Day 7: a 1 am start and 12–13 hours on foot. Bikat asks for high-altitude experience first.
Altitude sickness
Headache, sickness or dizziness? Tell your leader, rest, and go down if it gets worse.
Good to know
The small things
Cash, signal, water, permits and help on the way. Checked October 2026; confirm with your operator.
Bring cash
The nearest ATMs are in Yuksom, Pelling and Gangtok. There are none on the trail. Bikat Adventures
No phone signal
Usually no signal beyond Yuksom. You may catch some near the first hut at Tshoka. Bikat Adventures
No charging
There is no electricity on the trail. Bring a big power bank. Bikat Adventures
Food on the trail
There are no shops on the route. A hut caretaker may sell tea or snacks, at two or three times Yuksom prices. Limboo Homestay, Yuksom
ID for the permit
Indians need a passport, voter ID or driving licence. Aadhaar is not accepted. Bring two photos and a fitness certificate from a government doctor. Trek in Sikkim
Cold nights
Autumn nights fall to −5 to −10 °C. Dzongri, Thansing and Lamuney are the coldest camps. Limboo Homestay, Yuksom
Nearest hospital
Primary Health Centre in Yuksom. District Hospital, Gyalshing, is about 5 hours by road: +91 3595 250648. Trekup India
Evacuation
Beyond Dzongri, evacuation options are very limited. Getting down can take hours or days on foot. Packages don't include evacuation insurance. Limboo Homestay, Yuksom
Offloading
A horse or yak carries your backpack for ₹300 a day, or ₹500 if you ask mid-trek. Black Yak Expeditions
Jeep to Yuksom
A Sumo or Bolero from Siliguri costs ₹8,000 each way, shared by 5–6 trekkers. Bikat Adventures
